The CLUMP Soundtrack
Sorry to disappoint, but there's no way I can legally post the music selections which I listened to over and over while writing CLUMP. And I really wish I could, because the music was absolutely critical in helping me find the right headspace (no headless pun intended) when working. And of course, if a film is ever made I hope that some of those songs will be licensed for use.
But for those who'd like to assemble their own soundtrack album right now, here are the hits (and a few links):
1) Head Like A Hole A.F.I
2) If I Only Had A Brain The Flaming Lips
3) Fuckin With My Head Beck (*referenced in the novel)
4) Tear Off Your Own Head The Bangles
5) Till My Head Falls Off They Might Be Giants
6) Headlong Queen
7) Please Don't Touch The Stray Cats
8) Me And All The Other Vegetables Nigel Burch
9) Empty Head Catherine Wheel
10) Stand On Your Own Head They Might Be Giants
11) Hold Your Head Up Clawfinger
12) Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner Warren Zevon (*referenced in the novel)
13) All She Wants To Do Is Dance Don Henley (*referenced in the novel)
14) From The Neck Down Kaiser Chiefs
15) A Chicken With Its Head Cut Off Magnetic Fields
16) How Does A Duck Know Crash Test Dummies
17) Put On A Happy Face Tony Bennett (*referenced in the novel)
For the record, "Fuckin With My Head" is the song I most associate with Clump himself (and the one I picture him dancing to). It has an aggressive, infectiously spastic quality and ends with the tormented wail "Ain't got no soul!"
But it's "Head Like a Hole" which best sums up the whole CLUMP experience, and damn near sounds like it was written for the novel:
God money I'll do anything for you.
God money just tell me what you want me to.
God money nail me up against the wall.
God money don't want everything he wants it all.
[Bridge:]
no you can't take it
no you can't take it
no you can't take that away from me
no you can't take it
no you can't take it
no you can't take that away from me
head like a hole.
black as your soul.
I'd rather die than give you control.
head like a hole.
black as your soul.
I'd rather die than give you control.
[Chorus:]
bow down before the one you serve.
you're going to get what you deserve.
bow down before the one you serve.
you're going to get what you deserve.
God money's not looking for the cure.
God money's not concerned with the sick amongst the pure.
God money let's go dancing on the backs of the bruised.
God money's not one to choose
[Bridge]
[Chorus]
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
[Chorus]
you know who you are.

My personal and very sincere thanks go out to the wonderful artists who created all of this music.
